Community. Working together with shared attitudes, values and goals to support a mission of empowering children, adults and families to live healthy, safe and productive lives has been the driving force over the past year at Talbert House.
Together, we have faced the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, workforce challenges, drug overdoses reaching an all-time high in Ohio, high stress and mental health levels impacting our youth and families at an alarming rate and a continued housing crisis.
In response, Talbert House funders, donors, partner organizations, Board members, staff and volunteers have risen to the challenge. The year has been filled with highlights that include:
- Nearly 30,000 clients were served face-to-face and 146,000 received crisis hotline and prevention services
- Received a $3.5M grant award through SAMHSA allowing the agency to further integrate behavioral health, addiction and primary care services as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic
- Regional services expanded to six locations across Brown, Clinton and Warren counties with a staff of 80 delivering behavioral health services
- The Housing Service Line grew to oversee 450 permanent supportive housing units
- Participation in the state planning roll out of the 988-crisis hotline, an extension of the agency’s 281-CARE hotline
- Partnered with Hamilton County Job and Family Services to provide an enhanced Youth Employment program with a goal to employ 325 youth
- Once again, the agency was named a Top Workplace

Keylan and mr williams
Standing alone on the sidelines, 14-year-old Keylan watched quietly as kids around him laughed and played, having a great time. But something was obviously bothering him and put him in a bad mood.
“What’s wrong, Keylan?” Mr. Williams, a Life Skills Coach approached him. Keylan didn’t want to talk, so he brushed him off.
“Just give me a hug,” said Mr. Williams
Years later, Keylan recalls, “I gave him a hug and I just started crying. Then I broke everything down.” Mr. Williams has been Keylan’s life skills coach ever since.
Now at 18, Keylan is headed to college with a band scholarship and valuable skills he learned through Talbert House.
“It actually changed my life,” Keylan said. “The situation I was in before was toxic, and the only way I was able to get out of it was through Talbert House.”
Keylan was connected with the Agency in 2016, after experiencing mental health issues and a life of hardship. Growing up, he was the peace-keeper between his three siblings, despite sleeping on the floor with no heat or AC and little food to share. The children didn’t see their mom very often, but when they did Keylan said, “It was the best feeling ever.”
Keylan could see his mother changing for the better. She told him and his siblings, “I love you all. I’m going into rehab to get well.” Though 10-year-old Keylan wasn’t sure what that meant, he was excited to get to be with her forever. Unfortunately, his mother passed away the very next day.
After years of being unable to trust anyone, Keylan finally felt comfortable sharing with Mr. Williams, “I opened up and learned how to express myself and my feelings.”
Keylan was able to develop his leadership skills as a Counselor-in-Training at Camp Possible, the Agency’s therapeutic summer camp. “I’ve been in situations where I can relate to another kid and I can help them. I could give them a different route – that’s what Mr. Williams did for me,” he said. “He is my biggest role model and I’m glad to say he is like the father I never had.”

I realized this time,
I really wanted to be sober.
In 2018, India and Ashley met when they sought help for their addiction. Though the women had similar challenges, their journeys of recovery were vastly different.
After leaving the program, Ashley continued to struggle. Though she had been in and out of treatment since 2018, nothing was working. In 2019, she overdosed which caused her to have a stroke. After being in a coma for several weeks, Ashley had to learn how to talk again. Still, her addiction continued.
In October of 2021, “done with active addiction,” Ashley tried one more time. She came to Talbert House and entered the Engagement Center. By now, she knew what came next in terms of detox and treatment, but what she didn’t expect was to see a
familiar face.
In recovery since she met Ashley in May 2018, India began working as a Peer RecoveryCoach at the Engagement Center in 2021. Five months into her career at Talbert House, a face from her past came through the door.
Ashley and India reconnected in a supportive, non-judgmental community.
India was able to help Ashley continue her journey of recovery by inspiring her with her own story. Ashley had received help before,
but now, she had hope and a friend to show her the way.
“I realized that this time, I really wanted to be sober,” Ashley said. “I put my all into my recovery.”
For 31 days Ashley listened and learned at the Engagement Center. Since then, she has secured and maintained employment, reconnected with her daughters and continued engagement with her sober community.
“I’m living life on my terms,” Ashley said.
